Undiscovered App #64: Freeway Fury

Freeway FuryYou'll feel like you're back in the 80's, popping quarters into arcade games and trying your hardest to just finish the next level with today's Undiscovered App, called Freeway Fury by Vasco Freitas of Serius Games.

It has a simple premise: drive as fast as you can in order to reach the checkpoint before time runs out. But along the way, you'll have obstacles like cars, trucks, and oncoming traffic. But the cool thing is that you can hop from car to car in case you get in a jam, and this lets you avoid what would have been a solid collision and turn it into an opportunity for a faster vehicle. You get points for taking riskier maneuvers and jumps, and if you can make it to the end (with a helpful Nitro boost), you're awarded with more unlocked levels with greater challenges.

Check out the trailer below:

Freeway Fury has a Pro version for $0.99 and a Lite version that's free. It has an average rating of 4 stars from 16 reviews. It's definitely worth a look if you're up for trying something different with a bit of a retro feel.

Undiscovered App #63: What's Playing - Guess The Word

What's Playing - Guess the wordYou could get lost in the huge number of word games out there, but there's one worth picking out from the lot. Today's Undiscovered App, called What's Playing - Guess The Word from Violet Arts, takes the word guessing game concept and adds a lovely twist to it.

Instead of the usual static pictures added with lame filters that you see on so many games, this one uses hand-drawn animations, set up so you get three of them, and it plays on an endless loop to give you as many chances as you need to guess the word. There's some charming background music that gives an idyllic feel while you play, plus you can get some hints if you need a little help along the way by using up some Stars that you bank with each successful word guess.

This is a very well-designed game, and best of all it's free to download. There's a small ad strip at the very bottom that doesn't get in the way of the game, plus there's IAPs if you want to buy some more Stars for additional hints. While so many games are easily forgettable, What's Playing - Guess The Word is one of the few I've kept coming back to because of its simplicity and charm, plus it has 700 words to guess from, so you'll be plenty entertained. We highly recommend this, and others who've played it have been similarly impressed, as it has an average rating of 4.5 stars from 184 reviews.

Undiscovered App #62: Space is Key - Wait, What?

Space Is Key
You're dead. You're dead again. And again. Wait, what's going on?

That's what it's like when you first play today's Undiscovered App. It's called Space Is Key, made by ChrisJeff Games, and it plunges you straight into a retro-pixelated game where you have to guide this sliding block across the screen. But it's not that simple, because along the way, you have to jump over obstacles and time it just right so you clear the hurdles, and sometimes, you need to time the landing just right so you don't smash into an overhead obstacle. But one small touch, and bam! you're dead, and you have to restart the level all over again. Don't worry, because a level is only one screen, and you can die an infinite number of times until you get it just right.

There are over 40 levels at the difficulty level I chose, and I had to die over 500 times just to complete the whole darn thing (at least the background music is enjoyable while you die a hundred deaths trying). Strangely, I couldn't put it down, because each level seemed deceptively simple, and I swore I'd just do the next level before I did something else...

Well, that never happened, and because of that, this gets an honorable mention for the Strangely Addictive Category. Yeah, everyone bandies about the word "addictive," but in reality, most apps are not. This one, though, actually deserves it.

Space Is Key is currently available to download for $0.99 and has an average rating of 4 stars from 225 reviews. We highly recommended this one for a download.
